Darnal Mundy will go home walking and talking after receiving therapy at Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital

Thanks to the medical expertise of UHealth - the University of Miami Health System neurosurgeons and rehabilitation doctors, and therapists at Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital, a 3-year old boy who accidentally shot himself in the head is going home - walking and talking.

On August 4, the Mundy house was rocked by a piercing sound at 5:50 a.m. Darnal Mundy, age 3, had climbed onto a chair, reached into a drawer in search of an iPad and instead found a gun. He accidentally shot himself once in the head. The shot startled his parents out of their sleep and they found the boy lying on the floor.

His father swooped him into his arms and ran out of the door. His mother followed with the car keys in hand. As she sped through the Miami streets, Darnal’s father cradled the crying boy. They arrived at the pediatric emergency room at Holtz Children’s Hospital at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center within minutes.

“We jumped out of the car, ran in and were met by doctors and nurses,” his mother, Dorphius Jean recalls. “They grabbed my son and I kept yelling, ‘please save him, please save him’.”

Dr. Sarah Jernigan, a UHealth pediatric neurosurgeon at Holtz Children’s Hospital, performed emergency brain surgery to remove part of his skull to relieve pressure on his brain.

Darnal spent three weeks recovering in the pediatric intensive care unit at Holtz Children’s Hospital. On August 24, he was transferred to Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital, where he received comprehensive therapy led by Dr. Seema Khurana, a rehabilitation physician from UHealth, and therapists at Jackson, who provided intensive physical, occupational, speech, as well as neuropsychology and nutritional guidance.

After two months of therapy, Darnal’s rehab team is pleased with his amazing recovery and say his prognosis is good. Dr. Jernigan has also replaced the skull plate and the toddler is talking and regaining his strength and walking skills.

Darnal, who will celebrate his 4th birthday in two weeks, is looking forward to returning home to play with his toys and his three dogs, Snow, Gucci, and OJ.
