APRIL MARKS SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH

Roxcy Bolton Rape Treatment Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital Nationally Renowned for Providing Comprehensive Services to Victims of Sexual Assault

Miami, FL – Millions of women and men are the victims of sexual violence each year – an act that is defined as any sexual activity where consent is not freely given. Yet according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, it is the most under-reported violent crime in the country.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) statistics indicate that 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men will be sexually assaulted at some point in their lives in the United States. In 8 out of 10 cases, the victim knew the person who sexually assaulted them.

April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Jackson Memorial Hospital, home to the Roxcy Bolton Rape Treatment Center, is raising awareness of sexual violence by hosting educational outreach events throughout Miami-Dade County during the month.

Established in 1974, the Roxcy Bolton Rape Treatment Center is the only center of its kind in Miami-Dade County. It is named after women’s rights activist and Florida Women’s Hall of Fame inductee, Roxcy O'Neal Bolton.

“Jackson Memorial Hospital is like a lighthouse at sea to ships,” Roxcy O'Neal Bolton said. “Ships look out towards a lighthouse for direction and that is what the center is to victims of assault.”

Over the years, more than 70,000 victims have been helped at the Roxcy Bolton Rape Treatment Center. The center provides emotional and medical support – in a completely confidential setting – 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Roxcy Bolton Rape Treatment Center cares for victims of sexual assault, ages 12 and over. All services are provided without charge for all victims and their immediate family members, regardless of whether the crime is reported to police.

The center also offers the following additional services:

  • Confidential 24-hour helpline
  • Forensic evidence collection and preventive treatments
  • Crisis intervention
  • Advocacy
  • Information and referrals
  • Community awareness
  • Support groups
  • Therapy
  • Prevention/risk reduction education

The center’s staff provides outreach throughout Miami-Dade County, offering safety tips on how to avoid becoming the victim of sexual assault. Among those tips:

  • Do not agree to plans that make you feel uncomfortable or unsure.
  • Always plan for a backup way home in case your ride falls through.
  • Try not to rely on public transportation late at night. If you have to take a bus or train at night, use stops that are well-lit and populated.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings. Be alert.
  • Always trust your instinct: If you sense danger, react immediately and run away.

The assault does not have to be recent – it could’ve happened 20 years ago, and you can still receive help.
