Miami, FL – Nicholas Namias, MD, MBA, FACS, FCCM, medical director of Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, was named the chairman of the Florida Committee on Trauma (FCOT) by the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Namias has a distinguished career leading the trauma service at Ryder, one of the world’s busiest and most renowned trauma centers. His clinical areas of expertise include trauma and acute care, surgical critical care, and burns.

FCOT is a group of surgeons and healthcare professionals dedicated to improving care of the injured patient in Florida, home to 27 trauma centers statewide. Care of the injured or “trauma” patient is a continuum that begins the moment an injury occurs and continues through rehabilitation and re-entry into society. The FCOT is dedicated to improving trauma care through a focus on public and professional education, advocacy, injury prevention, standards of care, quality of patient care, and financial assessment of care.

"It's a real honor to have the American College of Surgeons entrust me to lead the Florida Chapter of the Committee on Trauma,” Dr. Namias said. “I hope to fairly represent all parties interested in trauma care in Florida, but above all else, to represent the patients."

Dr. Namias serves as the medical director of the Ryder Trauma Center for Jackson Health System. He is also the executive vice chairman for clinical affairs and professor of surgery for the DeWitt Daughtry Family Department of Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Dr. Namias received his medical degree from Rutgers Medical School, and completed his residency and fellowship at the Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami - Affiliated Medical Education Program.  His research interests include trauma outcomes and surgical infection.
