Surgical Oncology Patients the First Occupants of the Latest Project

Miami, FL – A ribbon-cutting ceremony with Jackson Health System officials inaugurated a fully renovated 10th floor of the West Wing at Jackson Memorial Hospital on Monday, June 13.

The 34 modernized rooms will primarily be used for surgical oncology patients – people who have had tumors surgically removed, under the care of Jackson’s world-class caregivers and physicians from UHealth – the University of Miami Health System.

“Projects like this are part of our commitment to Jackson’s patients and our taxpayer-owners in Miami-Dade County,” said Carlos A. Migoya, president and Chief Executive Officer of Jackson Health System. “This is a commitment that everyone deserves a safe and comfortable environment during their time of need.”
The West Wing 10 renovation project cost $3.4 million and was the fourth floor renovated at Jackson Memorial Hospital over the last five years. The 16,350-square-foot unit includes upgrades in infrastructure, furniture, and technology. Each room has new floors, ceilings, bathrooms, furniture with hotel-style amenities, including in-wardrobe safes and new, 32-inch flat-screen televisions. Family members staying overnight can enjoy comfortable convertible sofas, open-plan nursing stations, and Wi-Fi.

“Projects like these are the keys that help us unlock our best future,” said Joe Arriola, chairman of the Public Health Trust Board of Trustees. “They represent steps on the road to Jackson’s second century of care and our shared commitment to Jackson’s public mission.”

More than 1,000 patients every year are served on this unit alone with Jackson and UHealth staff providing some of the world’s best clinical care. Major upgrades like this aim to establish Jackson as a first-class healthcare system for the Miami-Dade community and beyond.
