Holtz Children's Hospital
The Children's Clinical Immunology Unit at Holtz Children's Hospital is one of the only units in the country that specializes in treating children, from infants through adolescence, who are HIV-positive. This specialized unit was created in 1995 to provide care and dedicated staffing for children with compromised immune systems due to HIV. As the treatments for HIV improved over the years, more children are living longer and better lives. Many of the children in Holtz's Clinical Immunology Unit have grown from infants into teenagers, coming back to the CCIU as needed whenever their health changes.
Along with our expert pediatric physicians, a team of highly skilled and dedicated registered nurses ensure that children who are HIV-positive receive proper care and all the comfort they need. Special emphasis is placed on maintaining a routine lifestyle for these children, which includes academic tutoring by Miami-Dade County teachers for children hospitalized for more than two weeks. Children and their families can also eat meals and enjoy time together in the unit’s special family-friendly communal area.
