Pediatric Kidney Transplant

Last Visited »

There are many important things to consider when selecting a kidney transplant center, including experience, survival rates, program longevity, participation in research, and physician and staff credentials.

The Miami Transplant Institute is considered one of the leading transplant centers in the world with a major role in kidney and kidney/pancreas transplantation.

In 2010, MTI received national recognition for extraordinary performance from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The kidney transplant program was one of only ten transplant programs in the United States to be recognized at the Silver level, and one of only six kidney programs to receive the honor. The pancreas program received Bronze level recognition.

The awards are presented by the Donation and Transplantation Community of Practice, which was established in 2003 by HHS to ensure best practices at all hospitals performing transplants. The awards are based on performance in three categories: graft survival one year after transplant, transplant rate, and mortality rate after being placed on the transplant list.

MTI is a collaborative endeavor between University of Miami Health System/Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine and Jackson Memorial Hospital.

MTI performs 250 to 300 kidney transplants per year—more than any other program in the state of Florida and 25 to 35 kidney and pancreas transplants. A multidisciplinary team of medical professionals and patient advocates work together to increase access to transplantation and improve quality of life.
